The benefits of secondary glazing

by | Sep 19, 2015 | Home Improvement

Double glazed windows utilize two sheets of glass separated by a gap, the gap is either a vacuum or it can be filled with an inert gas during manufacture. Either of these methods retards the flow of heat from one pane of glass to the other. Secondary glazing in Livingston, on the other hand, is supplementary glazing which is normally installed on the interior of the building.

The additional glass pane which is fitted to the inside of the existing window frame creates an air space as well between the window and the secondary pane, this works similar to a typical double glazed window as it helps to reduce heat transfer from either direction; outside to inside during the summer months and inside to outside during the winter. One important benefit of secondary glazing in Livingston is the fact that the original appearance of the home will not be compromised, this is of particular importance if you own a listed building. The secondary pane of glass is not obtrusive, the pane can be either fixed or it can be opened, installation is quick and there is no need to modify the structure or redecorate once the installation has been completed.

There are several ways to go about secondary glazing installation. Perhaps the most common method is fitting the glass into a frame; the frame in turn is attached to the inside of the existing window. Some homeowners prefer an acrylic panel rather than glass as it tends to be somewhat lighter and easier to remove.

All in all there are a number of advantages to secondary glazing when compared to double glazing. As long as the air gap between the glass panes is no more than 40mm you can be reasonably assured that this will deliver good insulation from the exterior ambient temperature as well as reducing noise and condensation. The glass that is used for secondary glazing in Livingston is quite effective against any noise including road traffic, rail and aircraft. When you have laminated glass of 6.38mm you can expect plenty of natural light in the room and at the same time the UV will be reduced by over 90 percent which, of course will reduce the fading of carpets and furnishings.

As secondary glazing can only be opened from inside the room it adds considerably to the security of the home, this is particularly true when toughened, or laminated glass is used.

Secondary glazing in Livingston is an ideal solution for the homeowner who wishes increased insulation and decreased noise without destroying the exterior aesthetics. You are invited to contact JBC for further information and a no obligation quotation.
